Why is SEO so difficult to learn, and what can I do to improve?

I hit my head on the wall trying to learn SEO. I'm not sure what's wrong with me, but the challenges of ranking, building backlinks, and writing quality content seem insurmountable. Maybe I'm just not cut out for this Internet marketing thing.
